The day after I graduation from college I deleted every writing assignment I ever had to do. I deleted all my assignments with a demented happiness, elated to watched every meaningless writing assignment I had been forced to write disappear from my life forever. Nowhere in the demented flurry of deletions did I pause to think that writing jobs would want samples of my work as part of the application process. Realizing this sure made me wish I had not been so trigger happy with the delete button. While I have to admit there were many assignments that I no longer needed, it would have been wise to search through the documents to determine which ones those were.

De-cluttering your computer is a great thing. It helps your computer run faster and it will make your life that much easier. But it is important to know what should be dispensed with and what you need to keep.

Like any college student, I had assignments that dated back to my pre-requiset classes. Looking back, I am not sure why I still had those assignments four years later. It is important to realize that some documents will never be used again and it is ok to delete them. Letting go of documents can be hard. However, like with clothes, if you have not worn something in a year, get rid of it.

The documents that you should keep are works that you are particularly proud of. Keep works that show what you are capable of. In the future, you may want to include these documents in a graduate program application or use them to get a dream job. Also keep work that you feel strongly about. It may never win an award but it makes you remember something. It is also good to keep things that are a work in process. You never know when inspiration will strike.

It seems like everyone is concerned about going green these days, as right they should be. But some of the options for leading a green lifestyle can seem daunting or like a scarifice. One of the easiest ways to go green is to reduce the amount of paper that is mailed to you.

You can stop being mailed so much paper by simply determining that you will be paying your bills online. Think of all the bills you recieve on a monthly basis. The number is quite large. The envelopes that the bills are sent in do not just contain your bill though, they often contain an insane amount of paper that means nothing to you. Half of what you recieve in the mail you will throw away anyway. To stop this cycle and to cut down on the amount of paper that is being sent to you, just elect to pay your bills online.

Almost every company now offers a pay online method because companies realize that not only are they using a ton of paper but that sending out the bills cost money, money that in turn ends up on you bill.

Also think of how much time you spend paying bills. Most people have a check book for the specific purpose of paying bills. Most businesses do not accept checks as a form of payment so it seems silly to keep a check book, which uses more paper, just to pay bills.

Paying bills online is great way to reduce the use of paper all the way around and is now very quick and easu online. On most bill paying sights, your credit card is held on your account so that whenever you are ready to pay your bill, you simply determine what to pay. Bill paying online is very quick and easy and is one great step towards going green.

Clearing Out the Clutter of Your Life

It’s moving day! You’ve made a major decision to live in a new place. Is it your first home? A bigger apartment? A new job in a new city? Whatever the reason, a move to a new home is equal parts excitement and stress. For someone who embraces organization, planning a move is the pinnacle of all their talents. For those of us who might be “less than organized” a move can be full of anxiety. You don’t want to wait for the night before and just start dumping everything you own into boxes. One of the benefits of a move is that it will give you the opportunity to clear out the clutter of your life.

Assessing what you’ll be taking with you on your move is easy if you think in terms of three simple categories: pack, toss or donate. The packing part is easy. This is everything you want to take with you to your new home. As you sift through those items you’re going to come across all that stuff that can be tossed. These are all the broken VCRs you’ve been hanging onto or the mounds of papers kept from jobs long gone by. Anything else can be donated and that includes old clothes, books and toys. You want to start off the next chapter of your life with plenty of closet space. Isn’t that why you picked the new home in the first place?

Once you’ve organized what you’ll be taking with you, it will be time to bring in the moving companies. That is companies as in plural. There is no reason why you can’t compare moving quotes to get the best price for your movers. If it takes six companies to come by to give you free estimates, then so be it. You’ll be grateful for the money you save.

Back Up Your Business Documents

If you run a business of any kind, or are an independent contractor with business documents, you may realize how important your files and data truly are. Having a computer backup of all of your business files and data is vitally important, because many different things can happen that can compromise those files, rendering them destroyed or otherwise unusable.

A single business computer may contain a wide variety of different important files including payroll information, accounting information, information about employees, human resources files, business sales data and marketing strategies. With so much information stored on a single computer, it should be readily apparent why keeping a mirror copy of these files would be so important.

If something happened to your business computer, the result could be a loss of all of your business files in one fell swoop. By creating a backup of your business files, what you can do is have an extra copy of everything that you can gain access to when you need it. A mirror copy of all of your files will benefit you significantly, especially if you remember to update your backups regularly so that your most recent files are included.

There are services offered that will automate the backup process for you. You can do the backups yourself, as long as you have a system in place and remember to make continuous backups on a regular basis. If you do not back up your files often, and your files are lost, you will not have the most recent additions to your system. A daily backup or a weekly backup is typically best, depending on how many files are edited or created on a daily and weekly basis. It is important that you create a backup system that works for your unique business, because every business has distinct backup requirements.

Environmental Effects of Computers

The environmental effects of computer usages seem benign. For the most part consumers believe that most of the waste accumulated through old and unusable computer and electronic devices is handled with the greatest of care to ensure no ill effects on the environment. To a certain extent that is the case but there are many other ill effects of computer usage on the environment.

Most consumers do not realize that a computer is composed of multiple toxic parts. This is why most states have now adopted laws which forbid the consumer to throw away a computer or other electronic devices in a regular dumpster or trash bin. If computer parts are thrown in a regular trash they end up in dumps where they will not bio degrade and will not be recycled.

There are other environmental complications associated with computer usage. In theory we use less paper than before but in reality we print more things than ever so the paper saved by not writing things down is negated. Another is all the energy needed to power our computers and mobile devices. A typical computer uses sixty to three hundred watts per use. Worse still a large inefficient gaming computer could use as much as seven hundred and fifty watts. We rarely looked at energy usage as a negative environmental impact since we deem it a necessity but in reality the electronics boom of the last twenty years has added a huge strain on the electronic grids of this and all other western nations. The key is to be responsible with your computer and energy usage. Make sure you dispose of your electronic equipment to electronic recycling centers and not just in the local dumpster. Also take note of the amount of energy you use while at the computer. Lower the brightness of your screen it won’t change the screen that much but it will help you save on your electricity bill therefore helping the environment as a whole. When thinking of the environment every little bit helps.
