Many people today are looking to build their own businesses. Sometimes they want to because they are a parent who wants to stay home with their children. Other times, it may be a desire to be their own boss that drives someone to want to own a business. It may even be just a way to bring in some extra cash, while working another job. No matter the reasoning behind it, many people are starting to look toward starting an online business.

If you already have a business that can be promoted online, you’ll want to set up a website to do this. For example, many photographers, artists and graphic designers are now promoting themselves and their businesses on the Internet. This helps bring in more customers, and therefore, more money.

You can also start from scratch. If you want to sell a product, first you’ll need to decide on a product that you’re comfortable with — then find a supplier that carries that product. If you make your own items to sell, this is easy to do. Many people today who do crafts successfully sell their products online. Even if you want to sell a product you don’t make, finding a supplier is generally not difficult. Another route you can go with an online business is to be an affiliate marketer. To do this, you would want to search for the top affiliate programs and try to work with them. You will need a website to do affiliate marketing, but often even a blog will work just fine, especially to start off with.

No matter what type of business you’re looking to get into or why you’re striving to build your own business, doing it on the Internet is a great option. Many people are heading online to find businesses they want to work with; get yours out there to be seen!

Economic Outlook for the Information Technology Sector

E-Business Lab
Image via Wikipedia

The economic outlook during these difficult economic times is dismal to say the least but there are a few bright spots that one can count on in the future that will sustain and exceed growth expectations. One sector that is increasing steadily is information technology. In fact, the Information technology sector is one of the healthiest in the nation. The United States bureau of labor statistics believes it will grow by an estimated forty percent until the middle of the next decade.

While the information technology sector is healthy, the rate of growth can vary depending on the type of job you have within information technology. Information technology can include many different job functions. These range from computer engineers, information systems managers, computer support specialists and administrators, information technology research and administrators and well as programmers. All of these job categories have been growing steadily for years. The information technology market has been the economic darling for a long time but with the ever increasing dependency on gadgets, the internet and electronics as a whole it shows no decline in sight.

The largest surge of job growth is expected to be within the computer engineering field. Essentially, computer engineers create instructions for computers to follow so they can accomplish what we want them to do. The lowest growth rate is said to be in the programming sector although that statistic can be misleading. The programming sector jobs are being slowly taken over by computer engineers therefore the decline in programming jobs is more of a restructuring and title change than an actual decline.

One category that is even more specialized than the rest is information technology researchers and administrators. In the future this category will require a minimum of a master’s degree in either computer science or business and is expected to grow by twenty percent or more in the coming decade.

The information technology sector is what we rely on to get out emails out, our online bill payments paid on time and our computers to run with such dependency it will be a long time before this field will diminish in size and stature.

Technology and Crime Fighting

While crime fighting techniques at a regular police station are not nearly as high tech as an episode of CSI nonetheless there are many technologically based resources an investigator can use to solve a crime.

The advent and availability of national and international databases has greatly increased crime solving productivity. There are many opponents of such technology mainly because of privacy issues but a national database allows various intelligence and law enforcement agencies to compare notes regarding a case or suspect. This background information can save valuable time and help with the flow and timely effectiveness of a case.

Other technologies that have been taken to new heights around the world include surveillance. CCTV or Closed Circuit Television has been in use in parts of Europe and Asia for decades and is thought to be a major deterrent for crime. CCTV is extremely prevalent in the United Kingdom where over half a million cameras are thought to be in London alone and close to five million around the country. One agency estimated that you can be filmed over fourteen times in any given day if you are in Central London. CCTV was a response to a slew of NRA terrorist bombings in the United Kingdom in the 1970′s and early 1980′s which killed several people including Lord Mountbatten, a close member of the royal family.

Another highly visible technological strategy used by law enforcement agencies is DNA technology. DNA technology has become a fashionable means of identifying perpetrators of crimes. We see it every day on television and believe it to be irrefutable proof that a person is guilty of a crime. However, there have been many cases where the evidence was later refuted due to faulty laboratory work. DNA in and of itself is very damaging evidence but how testing is conducted and by whom is just as important as what it results show.

Technology and crime prevention is a symbiotic relationship that will continue but we have to acknowledge that the technological advances are only as good as they people who interpret and perform them.

How to house it under one roof: Note-taking products

Question mark
Image via Wikipedia

The internet is full of useful and amazing information but the challenge is how to sift through all the material we have seen and how to keep the material we wish to view later within easy reach. The internet is inundated with new applications and programs that promise to help us achieve this goal. Many claim that they can help us manage our time more efficiently and organize the never-ending stream of information in our lives but very few of those truly deliver. Below are some of the applications that stay true to their words and actually do help the user.

Evernote is one of the most popular note taking products available on the web. It has a user friendly interface. Evernote allows you to capture anything you see and store it so you can easily access at a later time. Your notes automatically get indexed and become searchable. Evernote has many great features such as being able to take a photo of a business card and being able to store the information on it. You can download versions for Mac, Windows and there are several mobile options including Blackberry and IPhone. Once you download evernote and create an account you can access your stored information anywhere you have access to the internet.

Another great tool in this same vein is Backpack. Backpack allows you to store many things under one roof; webpages, to-do lists, notes and photos. It is geared towards businesses and is branding itself as an intranet for small businesses. Users can collect and share information with everyone within their intranet. Unlike the previous option backpack only offers a thirty day free trial and after that it is a paid service but as an alternative to buying a small business infrastructure it might be a great option for you.

Shelfster is beta based product that takes note taking products to another level by also allowing you to share your finds on social media. It labels itself as an integrated platform where anyone can share, edit, collect and publish information.

A Cloud Computing Platform Makes Storing Information as Easy as Using a Kids Backpack

IBM Cloud Computing

One of the biggest struggles for a person or a company is keeping track of all the information that comes in on a daily basis. If you are operating a small business, there is an enormous amount of information you need to keep track of. Vendor receipts, customer orders, client information, scheduling, and payroll, all play a role in the vital information you need to keep track of. So how do you as a business find a way to keep track of all this information and keep it stored in one place like a kids backpack?

The first thing you want to look into is the idea of a cloud computing platform. This is used by all kinds of businesses of small and big scales. A cloud computing platform is where all processes are hosted online by an online portal, like Google. There you can have all information and applications through that company and make sure they can be accessed by all employees.

How does this idea work practically? The idea is that if Google were to become your host company, then you could keep your calendar through them and could use their contact programs to store all of your contacts. You could use their document program to create and share word processing files as well as share them throughout the different departments. This is a great way to keep all of your departments connected with one main system that your employees could access anywhere in the world with just internet access.

The fact of the matter is that business is growing and evolving everyday and information is getting bigger and faster. You need to make sure you are streamlining your life and your business to keep up with the changes. Using a cloud computing format is a great way to start that.
