We all live with our computers, our phones and our televisions on a daily basis. We are constantly inundated with what scientists and psychologists call white noise. This white noise is all the sound associated with our electronic gadgets and appliances constantly running in the background of our daily lives. Most of us are so used to it that we don’t even realize it is there. And if we do hear it then we believe that it will have no ill effect on us but, in truth many people believe that there are significant ramifications to computer and technology reaching us so easily all the time.

Some scientists believe that constant humming noise associated with white noise creates sensory overload and hampers our brains ability to develop auditory organization. Studies have shown that white noise could be a factor in the rise of language impairment and developmental disorders in children. Continuous exposure to white noise sounds can hamper a child’s ability to recognize sounds that they would otherwise be able to pick up easily. While white noise does not appear to damage the hearing in any way it does cause the delay of hearing development which in turn slows down developmental progress.

In adults, white noise can result in memory deficiency or loss. Others have noted that white noise also contributes to heightened levels of stress and anxiety, which could attribute to the higher levels of anxiety disorders reported in the United States in the last quarter century. Scientists believe white noise creates an environment where the individual can be easily agitated due to the constant noise that reaches their brain. They may not even realize this is the cause of their moodiness or anxiety and therefore fail to take action against it.

The best way to alleviate the harmful effects of white noise is to simply stay always from electronic for a while. Something as simple as going for a walk in a park or a hike in the woods will help alleviate the problems associated with white noise. If you are feeling constantly agitated remove yourself from a home filled with gadgets and take time to hear silence again.
